After Care for Your Eyelash Extensions

Did you know the eyelash cycle is approximately four to twelve weeks? If some of your lashes fall out quickly, they most likely were at the end of their cycle so that may occur. Follow these guidelines for the majority of extensions to stay through a complete cycle.

*Please avoid getting your natural eyelashes wet for a minimum of two hours. However, ideally, 48 hours would be preferred to allow the adhesive properly to bond to a dry eyelash (reason being wet eyelashes do not make for a good adhesion). To protect your extensions from becoming totally saturated, try using a rolled dry washcloth and place over your brows when you shower.

We offer a specially formulated eyelash extension mascara if desired. Please avoid using regular or waterproof mascara as most brands of mascara may contain chemical properties and oils that will break down the adhesive. Removal of mascara from your lashes can also cause the extensions to fall off prematurely as well.

When cleansing your face, be gentle around the eye area by not scrubbing or rubbing your eyes. Oils will also break down the adhesive and cause the extensions to fall off so please avoid any type of oil-based product around the eyes.

Avoid using a clamp-style eyelash curler on your extensions. Every morning, it is best to use an eyelash comb.

Adhesives are cured by moisture. To allow your extensions to last longer, avoid extreme variation of heat, humidity, and cold weather (i.e. – hot showers, saunas, zero degree weather). Normal activities like swimming, can resume after the appointment, however it may shorten the length time of the lashes.

Be sure to schedule a fill-in appointment every 2 to 3 weeks for timely touch-ups. This will keep your lashes looking full and luxe.

Please do not attempt to remove the extensions yourself.

Contact our spa with any questions or concerns.

Possible side effects

Please note you may experience itchy, swollen, puffy red eyes. Some of the reasons this may occur are below. Organic Tan LLC or any of its technicians cannot give medical advice so please see a physician to determine the cause. However, given our past experience and research, we have listed what may be either a true allergic reaction or possible irritations:

Below are a few reasons why you may be experiencing irritation or an allergic reaction and a guide as to the difference between the two. Not everyone can have lashes but there seem to be a lot of people that mistake a true allergy – which cannot be fixed with an irritation, which may be due to other contributing factors.

Eyelash Extensions allergic reactions/ irritations may be caused by many various factors relating to the eyelash extension process and can happen at any time in varying severity. Some of the possible symptoms may be itching, redness, swelling of the eyelid close to the lash line, and flaky or dry skin.

The main difference between an allergic reaction and an irritation is that in the event that you are allergic exposure will cause your body to produce histamine. Sometimes the only way to distinguish between an allergy & an irritation is to see if the symptoms respond to anti-histamine medications such as Benadryl, Telfast, Zyrtec, Claritin, Aerius, etc.

Allergic Reaction – Cyanoacrylate

Cyanoacrylate-based adhesives are difficult to distinguish from irritation from eyelash extensions in general. Cyanoacrylate allergies can develop at any time. They can start after years of use, after one use or after a few uses. Generally, they manifest as a red, swollen, itchy lash line. If you think this may be the cause a test patch on another area of skin can be tried or a small section on one eye. We use Gladlash glue, which is cyanoacrylate based, a medical-grade, and are formaldehyde, gluten, paraben, and latex-free.

Irritation – Eyelid Irritation

Eyelash Extensions themselves can cause irritation of the eyelid skin because they sometimes rub against the eyelid skin while the client is sleeping. The thicker the extension, the more irritation they can cause in sensitive individuals. A method of determining if the irritation is from the lashes or the glue is changing to the thinnest extensions (0.15mm). If the symptoms are reduced or eliminated, you can conclude that the adhesive is not the cause. People with sensitive skin are more likely to suffer eyelid irritation from the friction of thick lash extensions rubbing against the lid.

Irritation – Seasonal Allergies

Some people who suffer from seasonal allergies find that they have to remove their lash extensions when the pollen count is at its highest. Again, the symptoms may be the same: swelling, itching, and redness. This generally happens in the springtime, but some people have allergies to pollen that blooms in the autumn or even the summer.

Irritation – Eye Irritation

Many people with sensitivities to the adhesive begin feeling sensitive during the procedure itself. If you do not shut your eyes completely the fume of the glue will affect your eyes, which may cause a stinging sensation, watering, and redness. Some people feel stinging, burning, and irritation at the time of application while others feel nothing, but wake up the next morning with red, swollen, itchy eyes. If the client leaves the salon with redness in the whites of her eyes, it can be determined that the eye itself has been exposed to glue fumes.

Irritation – Dermatitis, eczema & rosacea

Inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea are much more likely to suffer reactions to eyelash extension products. There is even a sub-type of rosacea that specifically affects the eyelids. Again, the symptoms are redness, swelling, and itching. Many people may not even be aware that they suffer from Rosacea until they have a problem with their eyelash extensions. It is possible to have eyelid rosacea triggered by irritation from eyelash extensions even if the client does not suffer from rosacea on other parts of the face.

Allergy – Medical Tape

Many people are not aware they are allergic to medical tape until they have lash extensions applied. A large portion of the population (up to 15%) has severe allergies to medical tape and band-aids.  The under-eye stickers are similar to medical tape and the skin around the eyes is much more sensitive and thin than the skin on the rest of the body and it reacts much more severely than one might expect. This allergy can appear at any time. Symptoms can develop after years of using lash extensions, or they can appear the first time the products are used. To rule out tape allergies, use no stickers or tape on these clients. For most people, gel pads are a good substitute, for others, a plastic mascara shield must be held under the eye while doing the procedure and no tape or stickers can touch these people’s skin at all. Tape allergies usually present themselves with generalized redness and swelling to the whole eye area, not just redness and swelling along the upper lash line.

If irritation should still persist, the lashes need to be removed and eye flushed with water if necessary to stop the irritation.
